Introduced as a dental practice “bringing smiles to patients on the autism spectrum,” Special Smiles was featured in a story on Autism Acceptance Month by 6abc reporter TaRhonda Thomas.
Thomas and her production crew filmed at Special Smiles on April 20 and the segment aired on the 5:30 edition of Action News April 21. You can view it here.
To tell the human story of this unique practice serving only patients who are severely compromised by special needs, Thomas wanted to interview a family on camera. Lou Berman agreed and brought his 23-year-old son Louie, a longtime Special Smiles patient who is on the spectrum and non-verbal. Lou explained that things most people take for granted, like going to the dentist, can be major challenges for people affected by autism.
Special Smiles Founder Mark S. Goldstein, DDS, led Thomas and her crew on a tour of the new sensory-friendly offices the practice is building one floor below the current space. Wall-size nature murals, a waterfall, faux skylights and fishtanks contribute to the serene atmosphere.
“Everything is designed to make the patients feel relaxed and calm,” Dr. Goldstein said.
